Apart from the obvious carrot of a share in $200,000 in prizemoney, the Autumn Classic also provides a great lead-up to events such as the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes for three-year-olds or top class open event the Group 1 Australian Cup.
Some Autumn Classic runners may continue on to the latter part of the autumn in Sydney where one of the key targets for three-year-olds with staying ability is the Group 1 Australian Derby.
The Autumn Classic takes place as part of one of the biggest days of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival that also includes the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, Group 1 Futurity Stakes, Group 1 Oakleigh Plate, Group 2 St George Stakes, Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes and the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes.
The exciting three-year-old feature began in 1957 under the name “Stanley Plate” and has since been called a number of different names. It was originally held as a 2000m race and has changed between 1800m and 2000m a number of times but has been run over 1800m consistently since 1987.
