2015 Autumn Classic a Possibility for Bayoonah

January 15th, 2015

Impressing over her short two start career so far, trainer Mick Price has revealed classy filly Bayoonah will earn a shot at a 2015 Autumn Racing Carnival black type event should she take out Saturday’s Seascay Handicap (1400m) at Flemington.

Working well in the lead-up to her racing return, Bayoonah jumped from the gates well in the GRC 150th Race Day Maiden (1100m) first-up on January 4th, receiving an ideal run in transit and extending in the final straight to fine the line close to two lengths in the clear of closest rival King’s Command.

Confirming leading jockey Nick Hall will again take the ride this weekend, Price told Racing Victoria he is confident the High Chaparral filly is looking for more ground and may even develop into a handy runner up to 2000m; opening up events such as the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield on February 28th as realistic targets.

“She was able to win over 1100m because of a good Nick Hall ride and the spacious Geelong track,” Price said.

“I think both the second and third horses out of that race have good ability.

“She wants the 1400m now and as she progresses she might even end up a 2000m filly.

“This race is certainly going to be a lot trickier for her, especially going from 1100 to 1400m second up in a short time but it’s the right option for her and a I think she can run top three,” he said.

“She only has to run in the first three to satisfy expectations but to think she can go from a maiden to this race and win is a massive ask.

“If she won I’d try and find some Black-type for her over the autumn.”

Claiming two strong barrier trials prior to her racing debut in early 2014, Bayoondah staked her claims as one to watch in her competitive debut on April 20th; overcoming an early check to finish fourth behind the likes of Manhattan Avenue in the Slickpix Plate (1200m) at Mornington.

Nominations for the 2015 Autumn Classic will close on Monday, February 23rd while a final field and barrier draw are due to be completed and released by the 25th.
