Confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington, trainer Lee Freedman has revealed he may instead aim three-year-old Minnesinger at the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield next weekend.
Claiming two race wins from his four competitive starts so far, Minnesinger returned to competition for an impressive two length victory over notable company in the McDowell Elsternwick BM64 (1600m) at Sandown on February 4th, and appears to be searching for more distance.
Conceding the wide and awkward barrier 14 in the CS Hayes Stakes also does not bode well for a competitive performance, Freedman told Racing Ahead he will discuss all options with owners Godolphin ahead of this weekend’s Flemington meet.
“He’s a very exciting young horse out of that good filly that we had Serenade Rose,” Freedman said.
“I’m trying to plot my way possibly through to the Guineas in a couple of weeks.
“I’ve got to speak to Jason Walsh and or Henry (Plumptre) at Darley (Godolphin) as to whether we pursue this race or if we switch course and go to the Autumn Classic next week.
“The problem being with a rating of 67-odd he was probably lucky they didn’t get a capacity field on Saturday, which would have put him right down the bottom of the entries.
“Certainly you would expect the Guineas would be the same way – it would be very unusual that a 67-rated would get a run in the Guineas, so there’s a little bit of thinking to be done there.
“I do like the horse, there’s something about him. He’s starting to show some very good signs.”
Performing well in several trials prior to his competitive debut, Minnesinger ran an impressive fourth in a minor over 1200m at Mornington in March last year before immediately returning to the paddock.
Returning in summer for a somewhat forgettable seventh in the Land Engineering Maiden Plate (1200m), the Lonhro colt broke through for a maiden victory in the Variety Club Maiden Plate (1462m) on January 4th, in what was his only other start prior to his most recent victory.
